            Explanation of Terms            
                               
Setting/Type Setting refers to whether a school is rural or urban.  Type refers to whether a school is traditional, magnet or yearround.
% bus ridership The ratio of the number of students riding buses to the total population.
Student population Total number of students at the school.
Storage length The length in feet from the beginning of the loading bay to the end of the internal school carpool lane.
# of lanes The number of traffic lanes in the storage area outside the loading area.
Sidewalk Indicates the presence of sidewalks in and around the school campus.
Crosswalk Indicates the presence of crosswalks in and around the school campus.
Turn restrictions Indicates the presence of turn restrictions at the exit of the carpool area (i.e. no left turn during school hours).
Loading bay length The length in feet from the beginning of the loading bay area to the end of the loading bay.
# of bays/ method The number of bays/demarcations into which the loading area has been divided and the method of demarcation.
Crosswalk Indicates the presence of crosswalks in the loading area.
Names/Tags The use of names or tags by parents to identify the appropriate child.
# of staff Total number of teachers present in the loading area.
# of assts Includes safety patrol children present in the loading area escorting children to their cars.
Equipment The use of equipment (microphones, megaphones, etc.) to enhance communication between teacher and children.
# of cars Total number of cars recorded from the beginning of the queuing until the end of the loading process.
% cars before pickup The ratio of the number of cars which joined the queue before the bell rang to the total number of cars.
Avg bay dwell time (mm:ss) The average time spent by cars in the loading area.
Carpool time (mm:ss) The average time spent by cars in the queuing and the loading area.
Dynamic Time (mm:ss) The average time spent by cars in the queuing and the loading area excluding the static idling time.
Max Q length The maximum length in feet that the queue reaches during the loading time.
# of peds Total number of pedestrians recorded in the loading bay area during the pickup time.
Ped-Veh Total number of pedestrian-vehicle conflicts in the loading area during the pickup time.
Veh-Veh Total number of vehicle-vehicle conflicts in the loading area during the pickup time.
Circumventions Total number of vehicle circumventions in the loading area.
