In partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, ITRE administers and processes all research project authorizations for the NCDOT research program to all universities within North Carolina.

Slightly different procedures are required for three situations:
       1. projects at NCSU
       2. projects NOT at NCSU
       3. projects considered as environmentally related
