Project work is conducted within the state of North Carolina and includes technology implementations and assistance. North Carolina transit systems are assisted through our contracts with the North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) Public Transportation Division (PTD) and through direct contracts with transit systems and local governments. Our North Carolina state clients include various divisions of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT):
- Public Transportation Division (PTD)
- Rail Division
- Bicycle and Pedestrian Division
The Group's primary focus in transit within the state is in the area of technical assistance to the 18 fixed-route and 82 rural public transportation systems, as well as direct support to NCDOT/PTD for research, policy papers and recommendations, and policies and procedures manuals.
In the past, assistance has been in the areas of computer application design, programming, technology support and implementation, and training. Other work includes:
- route analysis;
- service planning and design;
- transportation planning;
- fixed-route and paratransit operations (maintenance concepts, dispatch, scheduling);
- research on relevant topics to transit and NCDOT/PTD.
The public transportation group conducts User Group activities for Maintenance and Software Peer Groups for North Carolina Transit agencies. Please contact Debbie Collins for availability and more information.

Technical Specifications for Bid Proposals - Bus Procurement
This project included assisting in the procurement of buses by administering the documentation and providing methods for obtaining the technical specifications for the bid proposals. A Web page was developed as one method of distribution of specifications. The Metropolitan Transit Systems of the State of North Carolina formed a Consortium and were requesting bid proposals for the manufacture and delivery of low floor transit buses, alternate equipment, optional equipment, and identified spare parts. The City of Durham, serving as the lead procuring agency along with 12 other North Carolina transit providers, intended to purchase 40, 35, and 30 foot heavy duty buses, and 30 foot medium duty buses over the course of a two-year contract period and an additional one year optional contract period.
Transit Information Programs (TrIP)
Transit Information Programs (TrIP) will help your transportation system automate by tracking employee information, training, vehicles, customer comments, incidents, and helping you schedule, dispatch, and bill paratransit trips.
On the TrIP software product Web page you will find a full explanation of the characteristics of TrIP software products.
There are training resources available to those interested in TrIP, like downloadable training documents and pictures of every form found in the programs, and ITRE training courses. You must visit the TrIP help Web site for this information.
