About Us

The Public Transportation Group (PTG) conducts applied research, provides technical assistance to state Departments of Transportation and local transit operators, and delivers training to increase the professional skills of those working in the transit industry. The professional team draws from a wide range of knowledge and experience in rural and urban public transportation operations and planning, involving a variety of modes — transit, bicycle and pedestrian, taxis and passenger rail.

PTG pursues practical applications that can have immediate benefits to increasing efficiencies in transit operations and positively impact service and transportation choices for the passenger.

The Group has achieved national stature as the only university research program focusing on the operations of transit systems and supports planning, policy and implementation of all public transportation modes, and has extensive experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program within this group works closely with NC Department of Transportation with research and technical assistance projects.
