Public Transportation

The Public Transportation Group (PTG) of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education is responsible for research, training, and technical assistance in the area of public transportation. Activities focus on the following transportation modes:

• urban fixed-route and paratransit
• rural demand-responsive transit
• passenger rail
• bicycle and pedestrian
• taxicab and livery

PTG pursues practical applications that can have immediate benefits to increasing efficiencies in transit operations and positively impact service and transportation choices for the passenger.

The Group has achieved national stature as the only university research program focusing on the operations of transit systems and supports planning, policy and implementation of all public transportation modes, and has extensive experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program within this group works closely with NC Department of Transportation with research and technical assistance projects.

ITRE Researcher Contributes to Chicago Transportation Project

Jud Lawrie of the Public Transportation Group, a part of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE), completed research on a project for, “Chicago Metropolis 2020”, which led to the recent passing of a law and creation of a regional planning board that will better protect natural resources, minimize traffic congestion, and facilitate the more effective investment of both public and private transportation funds in the Chicago metropolitan area.
