Context Sensitive Solutions Summer Academy 2007

2004 CSS Academy Students

CTE conducted the 2007 Context Sensitive Solutions Summer Academy in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Students were provided with an introduction to the principles of context sensitive solutions as applied at various levels of transportation planning, project development, construction, operations and maintenance. Dr. John Stone and Dr. Joe Hummer, both from the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department at NC State University, led the 2007 Academy through coursework and case study activities.

In addition to classroom instruction, students participated in field trips that showcased real-life applications of CSS. Throughout the summer (May - August), students also worked as paid interns with the North Carolina Department of Transportation where they were placed in positions that directly addressed environmental concerns in transportation. Students were required to research and write a case study related to their work assignments.

On August 10, the students completed their internships and provided oral presentations of their experiential work activities to a group of local area practitioners and faculty researchers. In addition to a paid salary, the students received a CSS certificate of accomplishment and the opportunity to circulate their resumes to agencies and organizations seeking new hires who possess a broader understanding of transportation and environmental issues.
