Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Research
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program has the distinction of a long-standing working partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation — one of the oldest comprehensive bike programs in the country.
This partnership works closely together on research and technical assistance projects such as the ongoing studies and
their key goals below.
Safe Routes to School Program
- Support the administration and management of the NCDOT state program.
- Develop program guidelines, funding categories, application materials and instructions, evaluation materials,
and selection criteria for five (5) cost reimbursement programs. - Prepare and give presentations.
- Manage the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Community Workshop Program.
- Promote International Walk to School Day through the development and implementation of N.C.’s Walk and Roll Contest.
- Provide technical assistance to grantees and interested applicants.
NCDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning Grant Initiative
- Developed and implemented this matching grant reimbursement program that encourages municipalities to develop comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian plans.
- Created program guidelines, application materials and instructions, evaluation materials, selection criteria, a standard plan template, and a standard operating procedures manual for NCDOT's Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation staff.
- Developed the program’s Website.
- Processed submitted applications, coordinated review process and tabulated recommended proposals.
- Administered grant projects, attended committee meetings, reviewed and commented on draft plans.

Economic Impact Study of Bicycle Facilities on North Carolina's Outer Banks
This July 2004 study demonstrates an annual return on investment of approximately nine (9)-times the cost of construction of the facilities.
