NCDOT
Presents
Pedestrian Planning and Design Workshops
One-day
sessions, May 9-13, 2005
The Division
of Highways, the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation,
and the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE)
are jointly sponsoring one-day pedestrian planning and design workshops
during the week of May 9-13. Nationally recognized trainers
will be presenting the latest guidance on enhancing pedestrian access,
innovative pedestrian treatments, sidewalk design, signalization
and signing, ADA considerations, street crossings,
transit interface, and NCDOT policies, standards and guidelines.
Why
Plan for Pedestrians?
Walking is the
most universal form of transportation. Every trip begins with walking.
As the state grows and becomes more urbanized, pedestrian usage
is becoming a more vital part of the transportation mix. It is not
surprising that demand for integrating pedestrian transportation
into the planning and design of highways and bridges has also grown.
Coupling this demand with legislation passed in 2000 that requires
NCDOT to undertake multi-modal planning, pedestrian needs have become
a higher priority for the Department. These workshops are designed
to provide guidance in making planning and design decisions that
impact the "walkability" of an area.
Course
Content
These one-day
workshops will provide comprehensive information on the latest pedestrian
planning, design standards and research. Pedestrian-related issues
cross-cut every other mode of transportation, and therefore it is
important that professionals, who may not directly work on pedestrian
issues, be exposed to planning and designing for this mode. Workshop
topics include the following:
- Enhancing
pedestrian access
- Innovative
pedestrian treatments
- Sidewalk
design
- Intersection
geometry
- Signalization
|
- Street crossings
- Operations and maintenance
- ADA considerations
- NCDOT policies, standards and guideline
