North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Presents
Bicycle Planning and Design Workshops
One-day sessions, April 18, 19, & 20, 2006

Workshop Registration is now CLOSED!

The NCDOT Division of Highways, the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) are jointly sponsoring a series of one-day bicycle planning and design workshops on April 18, 19, & 20. Nationally recognized trainers will present the latest guidance on planning and designing bicycle facilities, including both shared-roadway accommodations and shared-use paths. Topics will include: NCDOT and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standards and guidelines, innovative design solutions, signalization and signing, street crossings, intersection treatments, operations and maintenance, bicycle parking, transit interface, and NCDOT policies and practices. The workshop is worth 6.5 PDH or continuing education credits.

Why Plan for Bicyclists?

Increasingly, communities across North Carolina have recognized the need to improve access and safety for those who choose to travel by bicycle. Whether for transportation, recreation or health purposes, more and more people of all ages are bicycling. It is not surprising that demand for integrating bicycle transportation into the planning and design of highways and bridges has also grown. Coupling this demand with legislation passed in 2000 that requires NCDOT to undertake multi-modal planning, bicyclists’ needs have become a higher priority for NCDOT. Municipalities have also placed a greater emphasis on developing bicycle transportation networks. These workshops are designed to provide guidance in making planning and design decisions that enhance the “bicycle-friendliness” of communities.

Course Content

These one-day workshops will provide comprehensive information on the latest bicycle planning, design standards and research. Bicycle transportation aspects overlap with every other mode of transportation, and therefore it is important that professionals, who may not directly work on bicycle issues, be exposed to planning and designing for this mode. Workshop topics include the following:

  • Enhancing bicycle access
  • Basic bikeway design
  • Shared-roadway accommodations
  • Shared-use paths
  • Innovative bicycle facility treatments
  • Intersection design
  • Signalization and signing
  • At-grade and grade-separated crossings
  • Operations and maintenance
  • Bicycle parking
  • Transit interface
  • NCDOT policies, standards and guidelines

To register for one of the workshops, please view the registration information page.
