About ITRE

Chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1978, the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) conducts research, education, and technical assistance projects on a wide variety of surface transportation issues. These projects include extensive work with municipal and state departments of transportation throughout North Carolina and the nation.

Administered by North Carolina State University and located on Centennial Campus, ITRE is part of an advanced academic community that facilitates the performance of research, training, and technology development to solve problems and to create new products, better services, and more productive workers. ITRE's services to the transportation community are enriched by NC State's network of resources and ITRE's strategic alliances with other governmental, academic, and private entities. ITRE provides quality end products and technical support that improve the transportation systems of the region and nation, and is proud to be home to two federally funded programs: the Center for Transportation and the Environment and the North Carolina Local Technical Assistance Program.

ITRE groups are supported by nearly 50 staff, faculty researchers and instructors, part-time staff, and students. ITRE professionals have backgrounds in research and education in an array of transportation-related subjects, including civil engineering, transportation planning, management, forestry, library science, writing, computer programming, publishing, graphic and Web design, and more.

ITRE utilizes and supports the professional and technological resources for research and other services of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system and Duke University, and is a participating member institution of the Southeastern Transportation Center (STC). A federally funded program, STC is a consortium of 11 southeastern universities pursuing regional approaches to transportation safety research and training challenges.

Our mission:

The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation.
