Funding and Governance

Funding and Budget

There are two categories of funds that are necessary to keep ITRE operating. One is project revenues, which pay for activities involved in each of our projects. The other is non-project revenues, which cover ITRE-wide expenses such as support services and professional development. Project revenues account for about 90% of the funding for the Institute and currently exceed $5.5 million per year.

Governance

ITRE is chartered by the UNC Board of Governors and is an administrative unit of North Carolina State University. ITRE reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research, Outreach, and Extension. The ITRE director manages the operation of ITRE.

The Council for Transportation Research and Education (Council) provides overall policy oversight for ITRE programs and policies. The Council is made up of transportation experts from outside the University plus a few University administrators. It meets once per year.

Two other advisory boards oversee specific programs within ITRE. The CTE Advisory Board and the TOG Advisory Board oversee these two areas. These two boards also meet twice each year.
