ADC50 2006 SUMMER MEETING



WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA
JULY 23-26, 2006


Celebrate VDOT's 100th Anniversary!



PROGRAM

The Preliminary Program (with Abstracts) for the ADC50 summer meeting includes an exciting and provocative plenary session celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act and sessions covering archaeology and science, battlefields in transportation, the use of historic contexts, Interstate highway evaluations, the integration of Section 106 and transportation planning, and other important historic preservation issues in transportation. The program will begin with the committee business meeting at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 23, followed by a reception that evening at the Great Hall of the College of William and Mary's historic Wren Building. The plenary session will begin on the morning of Monday, July 24, and the presentation sessions will extend until noon on Wednesday, July 26.

LODGING

Lodging for the ADC50 summer meeting will be provided by the Williamsburg Hospitality House Hotel, located at 415 Richmond Road (across the street from the meeting site). A block of rooms is reserved from Sunday night, July 23 through Tuesday night, July 25 at a group rate of $101 per night, single and double occupancy (taxes not included). Please note that the hotel will honor the group rate for two days prior and two days after the blocked dates (i.e., Friday, July 21 through Thursday, July 27) on a space-available basis. The Williamsburg Hospitality House is accepting reservations and you are encouraged to make them as soon as possible, especially if you plan on coming early for the ADC50 committee meeting and reception (Sunday, July 23) or if you plan on staying a little longer in the Williamsburg area. The reservation number for the Williamsburg Hospitality House is 1-800-932-9192. Make sure you state that you will be attending the "Transportation Research Board Conference" when you make your hotel reservations to ensure that you get the group rate.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee for the ADC50 summer meeting is $250 through June 30, and $300 thereafter. That fee includes the opening reception, meals (except for dinner Tuesday, July 25), and conference breaks. Registration for the ADC50 summer meeting is being handled online by College of William and Mary's Conference Services office.

TRANSPORTATION

Williamsburg is located approximately 50 miles east of Richmond, Virginia and easily reached by Interstate 64. Three airports serve the Williamsburg area including Richmond International Airport (RIC) (45 miles), Norfolk International Airport (NOR) (40 miles), and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) (15 miles). Discount carriers include Southwest Airlines (Norfolk), AirTran (Newport News/Williamsburg and Richmond), and JetBlue (Richmond). Williamsburg also is served by Amtrak and the station is located within a five-minute walk of the hotel and meeting site.

ATTRACTIONS

Williamsburg is home to both the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the historic College of William and Mary, the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the United States (1693). Other nearby attractions include the Colonial National Historical Park (Jamestown Island, Yorktown, Colonial Parkway), and the site of the original Jamestown Fort and Jamestown Church (Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities), Busch Gardens, and Water Country USA. Williamsburg is also known for an extraordinary range of shopping opportunities, from the National Register-listed Merchants Square to a wide variety of prominent outlets. The Williamsburg area is also convenient to Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Arrangements have been made for group-rate tickets to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Busch Gardens, and Water Country USA - both for conference attendees and family members - and that information is provided on the registration website.
